Pythagorean Numerology

Pythagorean numerology is the most widely practised Western number system, developed from ancient Greek philosophy. It assigns numbers 1–9 sequentially to the alphabet and is used to analyse personality, life path, and destiny.

Pythagorean numerology is the standard Western system of numerology, attributed to the ancient Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras (c. 570–495 BCE). It is the most commonly taught and practised form of numerology today, forming the basis of most Western readings.

Core Principle

Pythagoras believed that numbers are the fundamental language of the universe — that all of reality can be reduced to numerical relationships. His system assigns the numbers 1 through 9 sequentially to the 26 letters of the modern alphabet:

  • 1: A, J, S
  • 2: B, K, T
  • 3: C, L, U
  • 4: D, M, V
  • 5: E, N, W
  • 6: F, O, X
  • 7: G, P, Y
  • 8: H, Q, Z
  • 9: I, R

How It Is Used

Pythagorean numerology is used to calculate:

  • Life Path Number — from birth date
  • Expression Number — from full birth name
  • Soul Urge Number — from vowels in full name
  • Personality Number — from consonants in full name
  • Birthday Number — from day of birth alone

Pythagorean vs Chaldean

Where Pythagorean numerology is systematic and accessible, Chaldean numerology is more esoteric and considered by many practitioners to be more vibrationally precise. AstroMi analysts are trained in both.
